Meet our 2017 Champion Golfers
A hard –fought battle on the fairways at Reading Country Club on the weekend of April 8 and 9 resulted in the 39-year old Johan van Rooyen winning the Men’s Championship title and Shelley Daymond (45) walking away with the Ladies Champion trophy.
In talking to the pair after the Annual Championships, it soon became clear that it was not easy victories for neither of them. Leading on the last day coming down the 18th fairway, Johan, playing off a 1 handicap, mistakenly played the wrong ball, resulting in a 2-stroke penalty. “I had to dig really deep to keep my cool. Fortunately I kept it together and though I finished with a double bogey, I still managed to win the title with a 2-shot victory,” a delighted Johan explains.
Shelley, playing off an 11 handicap, had a sound 7-shot lead coming into the final day, but her nearest contender, Lieschen Reid, had no intentions of giving up that easily. “She really came at me with guns blazing and if it wasn’t for her 9 on the par 4, 6th hole, it could have been a much tougher final stretch,” Shelley admits. Shelley closed the deal with a 5-shot victory.
Both Johan and Shelley are keen golfers, admitting that it is a game neither of them will ever give up easily. For Johan, an avid sportsperson who also enjoys cycling and tennis, golf allows him time on his own and away from the everyday life of being in the property industry. “I love the exercise and at times it feels as if I am in my own bubble.”
Shelley, a member at Reading CC for the past 10 years, has served on various committees at the club, including being the Ladies Captain and serving on the Governing Body. “For me it’s not just about playing golf, but being part of this amazing club and promoting ladies golf and membership at the club”.
Shelley’s personal goal is to become a single-figure handicap. “I have proven that I can do it, and I really want to put my mind to it now,” she says. Johan, who has been at the game since the age of 3 when his father made him a golf club with a “hose-pipe” grip, says that aspiring golfers need to understand that to become a good golfer, the game does require loads of practice and commitment.
With two champion golfers the likes of Johan and Shelley, Reading CC truly has loads to be proud of.
