Rain, farewell to Errol Buys and adieu David

Hello everyone.

What a week of rain we have had! The cloudburst on Thursday caused severe flooding all over Alberton and we were literally 1cm away from having the clubhouse flooded. The water was lapping over the top step at the main entrance to the clubhouse!

Club Champs had to be called off due to the course being virtually unplayable this past weekend. The new date is the weekend of the 8th and 9th April. Please re-submit your names on the noticeboard to play in Club Champs. The lists are up for that, as well as the Knockouts, so enter soon.

More sad news this week is that past-president Errol Buys has lost his battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully in Stepping Stone Hospice on Monday evening. To all who knew him, a celebration of his life will be held in the Lower Conference venue at Reading on Friday at 15h00. The only request the family have, is that you do not need to say any “sorries” and do not wear black. Let us celebrate his life with joy.

A reminder that all subscriptions are due by the 31st March according to the constitution. Please assist us in getting this paid on time. You have all received an e-mail reminder and the ladies are sending out statements via e-mail too. If anyone needs to make an arrangement, feel free to contact me personally. I will be only too happy to assist if at all possible. Thanks for your co-operation in this regard.

If there is anyone with woodwork equipment at home who is possibly retired or has some time on his hands, we are looking for someone to make us pizza boards to serve our pizzas on. To someone with skill and ability, this would be easy to make. The bought ones are in excess of R100 each, which is daylight robbery. Please give me a call if you can do this or perhaps you know such an individual.

On a personal note, I have had a watershed week (pardon the pun!). I was offered a wonderful employment opportunity in the Western Cape and as my son will be going to school there next year, I was forced to consider it very carefully and make a quick decision about my future. It has been both heartbreaking and exciting, but I have decided to leave Reading and accept the offer. The only reason for this decision was my child. Reading has been a huge part of my life for over 4 years now. We have achieved so much in this time and I am going to miss you all terribly. I have formed so many wonderful friendships with so many of you and I would just like to take this opportunity to thank you all for making me part of the Reading family. The club is in good hands with a passionate group of people on the committees, not to mention the amazing staff! Their commitment to this establishment and you, the members, is inspiring. God bless you all and may the current prosperity we have been enjoying continue for many years to come.

With my imminent departure in mind, I have a strong desire to have 1 last party before I leave. I thrive on playing music for you all and Heather and I thought it would be a good idea to have a good old dance and “jol” on the 24th March after the Trivia. It will be strictly your requests as we have done with so much fun in the past. Please try and be here for a while, so that I can say goodbye in true Reading style. Join us for the Trivia and a meal and then let’s all let our hair down and have some fun! Bookings for the Trivia with Heather on 076 972 1551. FRIDAY 24 MARCH! Diarize now!

The following Friday, the 31st March is our next Night Trail Run at the club. There will be a 5 and 10km run and this is open to everyone, including walkers! It is relaxed and great fun. Heat is not a problem and absolutely anyone can take part. More info on how to enter online next week, but join us for this. It will be super fun for the whole family.

So a monumental week for many reasons. See you all at the club and let’s celebrate our beautiful club the only way we know how, by enjoying time here with all our friends!

Best wishes
David & the Team
